Vacation Inspired Watercolor Cards

June 10, 2021 by TR Leave a Comment

Are you a crafter who needs to get outside the craft room to get inspired once in awhile? For myself I find it vital not only for being inspired, but just for my overall well-being.

Whether it be my own backyard or an extended vacation elsewhere, I need it! There’s just something about breathing deep, letting your mind wander and taking in the beauty around you. Many times I find wonder in things I walk past daily but forget to take the time to just enjoy, like sunsets out my back windows.

Today I am sharing some of the sights from our recent Alaskan vacation. Don’t worry, there’s crafting in there too! We spent week on the Kenai peninsula exploring and fishing. The mountains of Alaska are breathtaking. Every time we turned a corner and I saw them I said “oh pretty”, really, every time! We saw nearly 30 moose, caught salmon and halibut, ate my first King Crab leg and just enjoyed life.

As promised, crafting! Whenever I travel I take some sort of craft. For this trip I wanted something compact so I opted for picking up a set of watercolors and a book of watercolor paper postcards. Easy to get in my suitcase!

I took inspiration from some of our adventures one evening, when I had some relaxation time, and painted. I am not a watercolorist normally, so it was fun to play in this medium. It’s more forgiving than I realized.

From our fishing day on the Kasilof River I painted the King salmon I caught. This was goofy looking, so it got modified later. You will see down below.
I also painted our scenic drive and a bear we saw at the conservation center.
When I got home I wanted to show how you could make these into cards by using as card-fronts and adding a greeting. You’ll see my corrected fish here! These could be super-personalized if you did a quick painting specifically for the receiver.
In the end I actually picked up this photo mat at a gift shop in Seward that I will mount my little paintings in and add a little photo of us to frame.

Hope you enjoyed a peek at our getaway. Remember you don’t have to go far to be re-inspired. Just take the time to step outside and smell the roses, breathe deep and open your eyes to the things you take for granted every day. Your crafty heart will be glad you did!
